Beyond the Courtroom The Continuing Questions in the Christopher Obey Case

Veteran journalist Dean Lubowa Sava says his investigation into the Christopher Obey case has revealed conflicting accounts regarding Obey’s reported death while in custody.

According to Dean Lubowa Sava, he interviewed Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine, who stated that prison records show Obey died after contracting COVID-19 while in custody. However, other reports published over the years have attributed Obey’s death to pneumonia, resulting in differing public accounts of the reported cause of death.

He also says he has spoken to confidential sources who dispute the official account. Because those sources have not been publicly identified and their claims have not been independently verified or confirmed by an official investigation or court finding, this publication cannot verify their assertions.

The existence of conflicting accounts has led to continued public interest in the case and calls from some observers for greater transparency regarding the official records and circumstances surrounding Obey’s reported death.

The Uganda Prisons Service has publicly maintained its position regarding the matter. This publication will continue to seek documentary evidence and responses from the relevant authorities and will report any verified developments as they become available.
