Massive Fire Destroys Ivory Hotel in Nansana as Cause Remains Unknown

The destruction of Ivory Hotel in Nansana, Wakiso District, in a fire on Monday, October 19, 2026, has sparked renewed calls for improved electricity reliability, stronger fire safety measures and better emergency response services in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

Nansana Municipality Member of Parliament Zambaali Bulasio Mukasa has condemned unreliable electricity supply, which has been blamed for the fire, and urged the government to grant the hotel’s proprietor, Frank Magala, at least one year of tax relief to support the rebuilding of the business.

Mukasa said the proposed tax relief would help Magala recover from the losses and restore the business following the destruction of the hotel. However, the precise financial value of the damage and the cost of rebuilding have not yet been established.

The legislator also called for the establishment of fire brigades and emergency rescue services in areas surrounding Kampala, arguing that improved emergency response capacity is necessary to contain fires and respond to other disasters.

According to information circulating on social media, the fire engulfed Ivory Hotel, leaving extensive damage to the property. Images and footage from the scene showed the aftermath of the blaze, with much of the building reportedly destroyed.

Initial reports indicated that police fire and rescue teams responded to the incident, although details about when the fire started, how long it burned and the circumstances surrounding its spread remain unclear.

While unreliable electricity supply has been cited in connection with the incident, the precise cause of the fire has not been independently established. Investigations are expected to determine whether an electrical fault or another factor contributed to the destruction.

It also remains unclear whether hotel employees, guests or other people were inside the premises when the fire broke out. No verified information was immediately available regarding possible deaths or injuries.

The destruction is likely to have significant consequences for the hotel’s owner and workers, as well as other people whose livelihoods may depend on the business. The extent of the losses involving the building, furniture, equipment and other assets is yet to be confirmed.

Mukasa’s remarks have brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by businesses operating in rapidly growing urban areas, where commercial development has increased the need for reliable electricity, effective fire prevention and accessible emergency services.

Nansana, part of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, has experienced significant residential and commercial growth. However, the ability of emergency services to respond quickly to fires remains an important concern, particularly in densely populated areas where delays can allow flames to spread and cause extensive damage.

Fire safety experts generally recommend regular inspection of electrical installations, the installation and maintenance of suitable fire detection systems, the provision of accessible fire extinguishers and the maintenance of clear emergency exits in hotels and other commercial buildings.

Reliable electricity infrastructure and proper electrical maintenance are also important in reducing fire risks, although the cause of the Ivory Hotel incident will need to be established through official investigations.

The fire has further highlighted the need for adequately equipped fire and rescue teams, strategically located emergency stations and timely coordination between authorities and affected communities.

For Magala, the immediate challenge will be assessing the damage and determining how to rebuild the business. The proposed tax relief, if adopted by the government, could provide temporary financial support during the recovery process.

However, the government has not been confirmed to have approved the proposed relief, and further details are needed on the investigations, the extent of the losses and the hotel’s rebuilding plans.

The incident has renewed questions about how businesses can be protected from devastating fires and whether emergency response services in fast-growing municipalities have sufficient capacity to respond effectively.

As investigations continue, official statements from police, fire and rescue authorities and the hotel’s management are expected to clarify the cause of the fire, establish whether anyone was injured and provide a clearer picture of the damage.

The destruction of Ivory Hotel serves as a reminder of the financial and social impact of major fires and the importance of combining prevention, reliable infrastructure and effective emergency response with support for businesses recovering from disasters.
