Four supporters facing aggravated robbery charges have been granted cash bail of Shs5 million each by the High Court in Masaka.
The development was announced by opposition figure David Lewis Rubongoya, who identified those granted bail as Eddie Mutwe, Achileo Kiyumbi, Gaddafi Mugumya and Wakabi Smart.
According to Rubongoya, the court granted each of the four bail of Shs5 million in connection with the aggravated robbery case.
However, Rubongoya said Mutwe and Kiyumbi will not be released immediately, despite the High Court bail decision, because they still have a separate pending case before the Magistrates Court in Kanyanyanga.
“Unfortunately for Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kiyumbi, they cannot come out yet as they still have a pending case at the Magistrates Court at Kanyanyanga,” Rubongoya said in a statement.
He thanked the legal team handling the matter, as well as the leaders and family members who stood surety for the accused.
The bail decision marks a significant development in the case, although the accused remain subject to the ongoing court proceedings.
Rubongoya described the aggravated robbery case as “trumped up,” reflecting the position of the accused and their supporters. The allegation has not been established by a court, and the accused remain presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The latest development is expected to renew attention on the legal cases facing the four men and the continued efforts by their lawyers to secure their release.
Rubongoya ended his message with a call for resilience, saying: “We shall overcome.”
