JUST IN: Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Obed Lutale Have Been Remanded To February 3

JUST IN: Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Obed Lutale Have Been Remanded To February 3, 2024,, after rejecting a request to refer their case to the Constitutional Court. They face charges related to national security, firearm possession, and treachery.

Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Obeid Lutale were remanded to Luzira and Kitalya prisons, respectively, on charges related to national security, firearm possession, and treachery. They faced four counts, including conspiring against Uganda’s security and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition ¹.

The prosecution alleged that between October 2023 and November 2024, Besigye and Lutale held meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, Athens, Greece, and Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at soliciting logistical support and identifying military targets in Uganda to compromise the security of the defense forces ¹.

Besigye contested the court’s jurisdiction, arguing that neither he nor Lutale are serving military officers. However, Brigadier Mugabe ruled that the court had jurisdiction, citing the duo’s alleged possession of firearms as grounds for trial under military law ¹.

It’s worth noting that Besigye was abducted from Nairobi, Kenya, and forcibly returned to Uganda. His lawyers, including Kenya’s former Justice Minister Martha Karua, faced challenges in obtaining the necessary licenses to practice law in Uganda
