Uganda’s music industry is mourning the death of veteran musician and Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi, who has died following an attack in Kibuli, Kampala.
Matovu reportedly sustained serious injuries after being attacked by unidentified assailants in the Kibuli area. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have opened investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack and Matovu’s death. The identities of the attackers and the motive behind the incident had not immediately been established. The death of Matovu marks the loss of one of Uganda’s most enduring musical figures.
Matovu began his professional music journey in the 1960s, performing with the Thunderbirds Band in 1967 before moving through the Police Band and Cranes Band. He later became one of the founding figures of Afrigo Band, which was formed in the 1970s and went on to become one of Uganda’s longest-running musical groups.
For decades, Matovu’s saxophone, vocals and leadership became closely associated with Afrigo’s distinctive sound. He remained an influential figure in Uganda’s live music scene and continued performing well into his later years.
His death brings to a close a remarkable chapter in Uganda’s musical history, with generations of musicians and fans having been influenced by his work.
As investigations continue, questions remain over who attacked the celebrated musician, why he was targeted and the circumstances surrounding his final moments.
Uganda has lost a musical giant. Afrigo has lost its longtime leader. And generations of music lovers have lost Papa Moi.
