In a significant legal development, Noah Mitala, popularly known as Noah Mutwe or Nuwa Mutwe — a senior aide and bodyguard to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) — has been granted bail by Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court following an arduous 61-week detention.
Appearing this morning before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, Mitala was granted bail on a cash bond of UGX 5 million. Additionally, his sureties must secure non‑cash bonds amounting to UGX 50 million The court also imposed strict conditions, barring him from leaving the country without express court permission.
Mitala had been held in remand for nearly a year, facing serious charges including incitement to violence, hate speech, malicious communication, and conspiracy to commit a felony — allegations the state alleges stem from social media messages and speeches attributed to him and co-accused former CID spokesperson Charles Mansio Twiine
Despite Mitala’s prolonged detention, courts previously denied him bail due to the lack of “substantial” sureties in line with constitutional bail guidelines. Prior attempts faltered when the court found his initial sureties — including his father and friends — unverifiable or unemployed
He re‑applied this morning, presenting a strong surety package and meeting the court’s requirements. Chief State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka, representing the prosecution, and State Attorney Ivan Kyazze had previously raised concerns over initial sureties’ credibility — but today, those concerns were no longer present.
