The Government of Uganda has announced that all Senior Six vacationists across the country will undergo patriotism and ideological training at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.
According to a post shared on the Government of Uganda’s official X account, the programme has been revived as part of government efforts to promote discipline, patriotism, national identity and responsibility among young people.
The training is expected to bring together students who have completed their Senior Six examinations and are currently on vacation before proceeding to further education, training or employment.
The government says the programme will focus on instilling values that it considers important for young Ugandans, including a sense of national identity and responsibility.
The decision to hold the training at NALI Kyankwanzi also places the initiative within an institution that has previously hosted government programmes focused on patriotism, leadership and ideological orientation.
Government has increasingly promoted patriotism programmes among young people, arguing that such initiatives can help develop responsible citizens and strengthen national unity.
However, the announcement is likely to generate debate over the content of the ideological training, its implementation and the role of government in shaping the political and civic views of young people.
For the students, the programme would add a new activity to the transition period between secondary school and their next stage of education or work.
The Government says the broader objective is to ensure that young people leave school not only with academic qualifications but also with a stronger sense of discipline, patriotism and responsibility to the country.
