The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has received a major boost to its leadership after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief, approved the promotion of 301 General, Senior and Junior officers in the latest round of military advancements.
The promotions are expected to strengthen the army’s command structure by placing experienced officers in positions of greater responsibility at a time when the UPDF continues to play an important role in safeguarding Uganda’s security and supporting regional peacekeeping operations.
Leading the list of promotions are six officers who have been elevated to the rank of Major General.
Among them is Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, whose appointment as Acting Major General has now been confirmed, making him a substantive Major General. Also promoted to the two-star rank are Godwin Karugaba, Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Michael Nyarwa, Richard Karemire and David Robert Gonyi, all of whom previously served as Brigadiers.
Beyond the promotions to Major General, the exercise also confirmed 83 officers who had been serving in acting capacities, giving them substantive appointments. In addition, 89 Second Lieutenants who successfully completed their probation have officially been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
According to the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the promotions are intended to enhance leadership, improve operational effectiveness and ensure continuity within the UPDF as it carries out its constitutional mandate of defending Uganda’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Military promotions are also seen as recognition of professionalism, commitment and years of dedicated service. They provide officers with greater responsibility while creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders to rise through the ranks.
The Ministry of Defence and the UPDF congratulated all the promoted officers, expressing confidence that they will continue to serve with discipline, integrity and dedication as they take on their expanded roles.
The latest promotions underscore the government’s continued investment in strengthening the UPDF’s leadership and preparedness to respond to both national and regional security challenges.
