Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has arrived in Kampala, Uganda, to attend the 12th High-Level Meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Great Lakes Region.
According to a statement from the Presidential Press Office in Gitega, President Ndayishimiye departed Burundi on Tuesday, May 28, to join other regional leaders in discussing collective efforts to address insecurity in eastern DRC and strengthen regional cooperation.
“The Bureau of Information, Communication, and Spokesperson of the President of the Republic is honored to inform the public that His Excellency Évariste NDAYISHIMIYE, President of the Republic of Burundi, is traveling this May 28, 2025, to the Republic of Uganda to take part in the 12th high-level meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the PSC Framework,” read the communiqué, signed by Rosine Guilène Gatoni, Chief of Bureau and Presidential Spokesperson.
The PSC Framework was established in 2013 with the backing of the United Nations, African Union, International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Its goal is to address the root causes of conflict in the DRC and promote sustainable peace through shared responsibility among member states.
Burundi is a signatory to the Framework and has been an active contributor to peace initiatives in the region.
This year’s summit is taking place amid heightened tensions and ongoing violence in eastern DRC. Uganda, the host nation, has played a prominent role in military and diplomatic interventions aimed at neutralizing armed groups and supporting regional stability.
The summit is expected to produce significant resolutions on:
- Disarmament of armed groups
- Strengthening cross-border cooperation
- Enhancing regional humanitarian response frameworks
President Ndayishimiye’s attendance reflects Burundi’s ongoing commitment to regional solidarity and peaceful diplomacy.
The event is being attended by heads of state from across the Great Lakes Region, senior envoys from the African Union, United Nations, and international development partners.
