Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom is facing renewed questions over the administration of its affairs after the Kingdom’s Chief Prince (Okwiri), Eng. Fred Mugenyi Rucunya, raised concerns about the health of Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru.
Rucunya reportedly made the remarks during a press conference, saying the Omukama is currently unwell and unable to fully carry out some of his official duties.
According to the Chief Prince, the situation has renewed attention on how the Kingdom’s affairs should be managed whenever the Omukama is unable to perform his responsibilities.
Rucunya referred to the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Constitution, saying the Okwiri has a constitutional responsibility to champion and oversee Kingdom affairs when the Omukama is unable to perform his duties.
The comments have also brought the Kingdom’s leadership structure and succession of administrative responsibilities back into public discussion, particularly amid concerns about the King’s prolonged absence from some public engagements.
In a separate development, Rucunya confirmed that the tenure of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga Ateeni expired several months ago.
He said changes within the Kingdom’s leadership are expected, although he did not give a specific date for when the changes will be announced or implemented.
The developments have sparked renewed public interest in the future administration of the historic Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, particularly over who should oversee day-to-day affairs when the Omukama is unable to perform his official duties.
However, details about the Omukama’s current health condition and the extent to which it has affected the operations of the Kingdom remain unclear.
