National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has appeared before the High Court in Kampala to challenge the election of NRM candidate Minsa Kabanda as Kampala Central Member of Parliament.
Rubongoya, who was Kabanda’s main challenger in the January 2026 general elections, appeared at the High Court’s Twed Towers on Monday, September 14, 2026, as the court began hearing his election petition.
In his petition, Rubongoya is challenging both the outcome of the election and the validity of Kabanda’s nomination. He alleges that there were inconsistencies in the names appearing on some of Kabanda’s official documents.
He has also raised allegations of multiple voting, ballot stuffing and voter intimidation at several polling stations within the constituency.
The allegations have not been established by the court and are expected to be tested through evidence presented by both the petitioner and the respondents.
Rubongoya finished second in the Kampala Central parliamentary race, with Kabanda emerging as the winner.
The case is part of a wider group of election petitions filed following Uganda’s 2026 general elections. The Judiciary has prioritised the hearing of hundreds of parliamentary and Local Council election petitions, with the programme expected to continue until mid-November.
The High Court’s eventual ruling will determine whether Kabanda retains the Kampala Central parliamentary seat or whether any further legal action will be required regarding the election.
For now, the outcome remains in the hands of the court as both sides present their evidence and arguments.
