The Life and Legacy of General Moses Ali

General Moses Ali is a prominent Ugandan politician and retired military officer who has played a significant role in the country’s history. Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, West Nile sub-region, Northern Uganda, Ali has had a long and complex career spanning over five decades.

Ali holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Makerere University and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Center in Kampala. He also has qualifications from military educational institutions in Uganda, Israel, and the United Kingdom.

Ali’s military and political career began in 1971 when he was involved in the coup d’état that overthrew President Milton Obote and brought Idi Amin to power. He rose through the ranks during Amin’s regime, serving as:

  • Minister of Finance (before being replaced by Al-Haji Jjumba Masagazi)

After Amin’s regime collapsed in 1979, Ali fled into exile in southern Sudan. In the 1980s, he led the Uganda National Rescue Front in an armed rebellion against the government of reinstated President Milton Obote. He later negotiated a favorable deal with Yoweri Museveni, who took power as President in 1986. Ali’s forces were integrated into Uganda’s new national army, and he was appointed:

  • Major General in the National Resistance Army (later Uganda People’s Defence Force)

Ali’s influence and wealth grew as he became a powerful figure in Uganda’s government and military. He has held various positions, including:

  • First Deputy Prime Minister (2016-2021)
  • Third Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business (2011-2016)
  • Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament (current position)
  • Member of Parliament for East Moyo County in Adjumani District (since 2011)

Today, General Moses Ali is a highly influential figure in Ugandan politics, with a complex legacy reflecting the country’s tumultuous history. He has been promoted to the rank of:

  • General in the Uganda People’s Defence Force

Ali’s legacy continues to be felt in Uganda today, with his contributions to the country’s history and development being a subject of ongoing discussion and debate.
