Cristian Romero Bids Emotional Farewell to Tottenham as Atletico Madrid Move Nears

LONDON — Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has appeared to confirm the end of his five-year spell at the club, paving the way for his expected move to Atletico Madrid in a deal reportedly worth £34 million.

The Argentina international used social media to deliver an emotional farewell to Tottenham supporters, describing the north London club not simply as a place where he played football, but as a home where he and his family built a significant part of their lives.

Romero’s departure marks the end of an era for a player who became one of the defining figures of Tottenham’s recent campaigns and eventually took on the responsibility of captaining the side.

In his farewell message, Romero revealed that he arrived at Tottenham with one major ambition — to help the club end its long wait for silverware.

“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history.”

That ambition was ultimately fulfilled, with Romero pointing to Tottenham’s return to trophy-winning success as one of the defining achievements of his time at the club.

And we did it,” he wrote.

The defender acknowledged that his time at Tottenham was not without difficulties, but deliberately chose to leave the club by focusing on the achievements and relationships that shaped his career rather than the setbacks.

His message also offered a strong indication of the emotional weight behind his departure.

Romero thanked coaches, teammates, staff and those working behind the scenes, but reserved his most personal appreciation for Tottenham’s supporters.

He credited the fans with making him feel accepted from his first day at the club, thanking them for the songs, flags, applause and support that accompanied his five-year journey.

The farewell comes as Atletico Madrid close in on an agreement that would see Romero return to Spain. Atletico have reportedly agreed a deal in principle worth £34 million for the defender, with the transfer now moving towards formal completion.

For Tottenham, Romero’s exit represents more than the loss of another player. The club is losing an established leader, an experienced international defender and a figure who had become closely associated with the team’s identity on the pitch.

For Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, the move would represent a significant defensive reinforcement, bringing in a player with Premier League experience and a proven record at international level with Argentina.

Romero’s own words suggest that, despite the transfer, his relationship with Tottenham will not simply disappear.

“I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here,” he wrote.

And in a final message to the supporters, he added:

“Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever.”

With the Atletico Madrid move now nearing completion, Tottenham are preparing for life without a captain who arrived with a dream of making history — and leaves believing he played a part in doing exactly that.
