A devastating explosion rocked Munyonyo, a Kampala suburb, on Tuesday morning, killing at least two people and sending shockwaves through the city. The blast occurred near the Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine, where thousands of pilgrims had gathered to commemorate the annual Uganda Martyrs Day, a significant religious event that attracts millions of pilgrims from Uganda and neighboring countries.
According to preliminary reports, the remains of two individuals were found at the scene, alongside the wreckage of a destroyed motorcycle. It’s believed that a suicide bomber and a motorcycle rider succumbed to injuries sustained in the explosion. Security forces, including the military and police bomb squad, quickly responded to the scene, which has been cordoned off as investigations begin.
Forensic teams are meticulously examining the debris to determine the nature of the blast, possible motives, and whether it was a targeted or accidental detonation. Although no official statement has been issued by the Uganda Police Force or the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the discovery of body parts suggests at least one fatality.
The incident occurs amid heightened security operations around Kampala, as Uganda hosts the annual Martyrs Day celebrations, which commemorates the execution of 45 Christian converts between 1885 and 1887. This year’s celebration marked the 60th anniversary of the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs, a significant milestone in the country’s religious history.
Security agencies have been on high alert in recent weeks, following warnings of potential threats from extremist groups seeking to disrupt public gatherings. The event draws large crowds from Uganda and neighboring countries, making security a top priority. The Uganda government disbursed Sh4.2 billion to support the 2025 Martyrs Day celebrations, including Sh2 billion for the Catholic Church, Sh2 billion for the Anglican Church, and Sh200 million for the Muslim community.
The Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations began a month earlier with pilgrims walking thousands of kilometers to Namugongo in honor of the Uganda Martyrs. The event is a significant cultural and religious occasion, with dignitaries from around the world attending and giving speeches.
