The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party, is standing more chances of getting more support as seven new opposition political parties emerge on the political scene as 2026 elections nears.
The 7 new parties that have been fully cleared and registered with the Uganda Electoral Commission include, National Foundation Party, National Revival Coalition, National Agrarian Party, People Power Front, Shine Uganda, Uganda Prosperity Party and the National Economic and Redemption Party, are to affect more existing opposition parties as most of their members are likely to join the new parties.
The one that stands out in all these new parties is the People Power Front where it is alleged that founder members of this party are prominent members of opposition parties in Parliament.
Sources say that this new party (People Power Front), it is having support close to 50 members of parliament and with more support from from local council leaders at all levels.
Opposition parties with members in Parliament include, Uganda People’s Congress UPC, Forum For Democratic Change FDC, National Unity Platform NUP, Democratic Party and JEEMA.
However, most of these opposition parties are burdened with internal conflicts which adversely affects their performance.
FDC is divided into two factions, one at Katonga and another one at Najjanakumbi, NUP is facing a court case with founders demanding the return of their party and charging its current leadership of forging party documents, UPC and DP are being accused of working with the ruling NRM, leaving their members in disarray and free to join other parties. This gives the ruling NRM chances of getting more members from the opposition.
Sources say, a grand prayer launch of one of these new parties is slated for July in Masaka and it is expected to be attended by many prominent leaders in Uganda, including religious leaders.
