Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, a prominent city lawyer, is seeking the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket to fill the Kawempe North parliamentary seat left vacant by the late Muhammad Ssegirinya. Nalukoola is among over 10 aspirants vying for the seat.
The seat is heating up as various candidates vie for the position. With several aspirants from different parties, the competition is expected to be fierce.
The controversy surrounding Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola and the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket has been dismissed as false and blackmail by NUP leaders. Reports had alleged that Fred Nyanzi, NUP’s Chief Mobilizer, demanded UGX 400 million from Alex Luwemba in exchange for the party’s nomination, claiming Nalukoola had already offered UGX 320 million.
However, it’s worth noting that Nalukoola is one of the aspirants for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat, which became vacant after the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya. Nalukoola, a prominent city lawyer, is running on the NUP ticket, alongside other contenders like Alex Luwemba, Umar Magala, and Salif Sserunkuuma.
The Electoral Commission has set March 13, 2025, as the date for the by-election, with nomination of candidates scheduled for February 26-27, 2025 ³. The campaign period will run from February 28 to March 11, 2025.
Elias is a renowned human rights defender in Uganda, known for his articulate, vocal, and bold approach to seeking justice for marginalized communities. His legal practice focuses on human rights, constitutional law, civil litigation, commercial and land transactions, and dispute resolution.
With a strong educational background in law from Makerere University Kampala and a postgraduate diploma in legal practice from the Law Development Centre (LDC), Elias has built a impressive career. He started his legal practice in 2014 and has argued numerous cases, including at the Ugandan Supreme Court.
Elias’s commitment to human rights and justice is evident in his involvement in several high-profile cases, such as the Togikwatako legal team that challenged the Amendment of Article 102(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. He has also been instrumental in defending Muslim suspects incarcerated over allegations of murdering Muslim clerics.
In addition to his legal work, Elias is a motivational speaker, National Legal Advisor of the Democratic Party (DP) in Uganda, and advises the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA). He is also a board member of the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation (BUCADEF) and sits on several school boards.
