Byamukama Declares Zero Tolerance for Bribery in Road Projects

Minister of Works and Transport Fred Byamukama has urged contractors to report any ministry officials demanding bribes, saying corruption will not be tolerated in the implementation of government road projects.

Speaking during a meeting with road contractors in Kampala, Byamukama said his office has an open-door policy and encouraged contractors to contact him directly if they encounter officials seeking illegal payments.

The minister also pledged that the government will clear verified outstanding payments, resolve land acquisition challenges before new projects begin, and improve project supervision to reduce delays.

He called on contractors to complete projects within agreed budgets, restore any community facilities damaged during construction, and improve the technical capacity of local firms. Foreign contractors were encouraged to work with and mentor Ugandan companies.

Contractors raised concerns over rising fuel and cement costs, delayed payments, and alleged fuel extortion by individuals targeting government-funded projects. Byamukama said the ministry would investigate the allegations and remain committed to transparency, accountability, and timely completion of road infrastructure projects.
