Uganda and U.S. Reignite Bilateral Ties in High-Level Defence Talks

Uganda and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a meeting between Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the new U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Uganda, Mikael (Mika) Cleverley.

The meeting, held in Fort Portal, focused on areas of cooperation including defence, regional security, counter-terrorism, and development programmes. It was Mr. Cleverley’s first official engagement with Uganda’s military leadership since taking up his diplomatic assignment.

General Kainerugaba welcomed the new U.S. representative and praised the long-standing partnership between the two countries, especially in security cooperation, military training, health, education, and other development areas.

The UPDF chief also raised concerns over continued U.S. travel advisories on Uganda, saying they have affected the country’s tourism sector. He assured that Uganda remains committed to protecting visitors and maintaining a safe environment.

Mr. Cleverley thanked the CDF for hosting him and said the United States remains committed to deepening its relationship with Uganda. He noted the importance of continued cooperation between the two nations in areas of shared interest.

The meeting was attended by senior military officials, including Commander Land Forces Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga and Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security Major General Richard Otto.

The engagement comes as Uganda and the United States continue efforts to strengthen their partnership on security and development issues.
