When you talk about Ugandan football legends, one name stands tall above the rest – Ibrahim Sekagya.
He is not just a former Uganda Cranes center back. He is history. He is the first and only Ugandan to play professional football on four different continents.
His journey started at KCCA FC in Africa. It then took him to South America with Arsenal de Sarandi of Argentina, to Europe with Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg, and finally to North America with New York Red Bulls in the USA, where he hanged his boots in December 2014.
A Leader Like No Other
Sekagya was born a leader. He captained the Uganda Cranes with passion and pride until 2012.
At Red Bull Salzburg, he made history as the first and only Ugandan to captain a European club, a record that still stands today. In the US, he also served as stand-in captain on various occasions for New York Red Bulls.
More Than a Player – A Generous Heart
Beyond the trophies and the armbands, Sekagya is remembered for his big heart and love for his country.
During his playing days, he recommended Emmanuel Okwi to Red Bull Salzburg – a lifetime opportunity that was unfortunately denied by fever. That’s a story for another day.
His generosity did not stop there. He opened the doors for fellow Ugandans at New York Red Bulls, helping sign Owen Kasule, Steven Sserwadda and Frank Ssebuufu.
From Legend to Coach
Sekagya’s winning mentality followed him into coaching. He has won multiple titles as a player and as a coach with New York Red Bulls II, a success that saw him promoted to Assistant Coach of the New York Red Bulls senior team.
His coaching credentials speak volumes about his potential to become one of the greats in the dugout.
In 2017, he also served on the Uganda Cranes technical team during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, sharing his vast experience with the national team.
The Dream Lives On
To this day, many Ugandan football fans share one dream – to see Ibrahim Sekagya return home to manage the Uganda Cranes.
From Lugogo to Salzburg to New York – Sekagya is, and will always be, a true legend of the game.
