Former Uganda Cranes captain Andy Mwesigwa is facing the possible loss of AMESCO High School in Wakiso after a loan owed to ABC Capital Bank reportedly grew to about UGX 1.3 billion.
Mwesigwa, who captained the national football team and played professionally abroad, established the school after transitioning from a football academy. He used earnings from his playing career to build the institution aimed at nurturing students both academically and in sports.
According to reports, the former defender secured the loan between 2018 and 2020 to finance the expansion of the school. The plan was to increase capacity and improve facilities at AMESCO.
However, the COVID-19 lockdowns severely disrupted operations. With schools closed for nearly two years, tuition revenue stopped, making it difficult for Mwesigwa to maintain loan repayments.
The ex-Cranes star says he has already paid approximately UGX 230 million toward the loan. Despite the payments, the outstanding balance has continued to grow due to accumulated interest and other charges.
The situation highlights the financial challenges many private school owners faced during the pandemic. With limited government support and a long period without income, several institutions took on debt to stay afloat, only to struggle with repayments afterward.
As of now, the future of AMESCO High School remains uncertain as discussions with the bank continue.
Mwesigwa’s case has sparked conversations online about the need for debt relief and tailored support for education investors who were hit hardest by the pandemic.
