Uganda’s highly anticipated Kampala-Jinja Expressway project has reached a critical milestone, marking a significant step towards transforming the country’s transportation infrastructure.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the opening of a bid from a lone consortium, paving the way for the selection of a contractor to undertake the project.
The Kampala-Jinja Expressway is a game-changer for Uganda’s economy, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Kampala and Jinja, while also reducing travel time and boosting trade along the Northern Corridor. This corridor is a vital link between Uganda, Kenya, and the broader East African region.
Initially, four consortia were prequalified to submit bids, but only one firm met the deadline. The evaluation process is now underway to assess the bid’s legal, technical, environmental, and financial compliance. This assessment is expected to take no more than two months, after which a decision will be made on whether the bidder qualifies for the contract award.

Cost: Approximately $1.48 billion.
Implementation: Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Features: 95km toll road with dual carriageway and controlled access.
Expected Impact: Reduced travel time from over three hours to just one hour, improving trade efficiency and supporting economic growth.
With the procurement process progressing, Ugandans eagerly await the final selection of the contractor who will spearhead this transformative project.
The Kampala-Jinja Expressway is poised to play a vital role in modernizing Uganda’s road network and boosting regional trade.
