A major leadership shake-up has rocked the Buganda Kingdom after Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II confirmed the resignation of the Katikkiro’s deputies and members of the Katikkiro’s administrative team.
The officials left office after overseeing this year’s coronation anniversary celebrations, which turned out to be their final official assignment. Their departure has sparked widespread discussion within Mengo and among Buganda subjects, with many asking what prompted the unexpected changes.
Despite the growing public interest, the kingdom has not issued an official explanation for the resignations. The silence has fuelled speculation, although no evidence has been presented linking the departures to internal disagreements, poor performance or any other administrative concerns.
The timing of the resignations has attracted particular attention. Coming immediately after one of Buganda’s most significant annual events, some observers believe the changes could be part of a planned leadership transition, while others suspect there may be broader issues behind the scenes. However, these remain matters of public discussion, as Mengo has not commented on the reasons for the reshuffle.
The developments have also revived interest in the Kabaka’s recent public engagements. In recent months, discussions have emerged over his reduced visibility at Bulange, the kingdom’s administrative headquarters. Some sources have claimed that the Kabaka has made more frequent visits to the Kasubi Royal Tombs than appearances at official meetings in Mengo. Those claims have not been independently verified, and the kingdom has not publicly addressed them.
Attention has also focused on the Kabaka’s recent meeting with Buganda’s clan heads after a lengthy period without such a gathering. Cultural and political observers described the meeting as significant, saying it highlighted the importance of consultation with traditional leaders at a time when the kingdom is undergoing administrative changes.
The leadership reshuffle has also prompted debate about the future of Buganda’s administration. While some commentators argue that the kingdom is entering a period of institutional renewal, others believe the changes could be aimed at strengthening coordination within Mengo. No official statement has confirmed either view.
Leadership changes within Buganda often attract national attention because of the kingdom’s historical influence and its close connection with millions of subjects across central Uganda.
As Mengo prepares to appoint a new administrative team, expectations remain high that the new leaders will strengthen the kingdom’s institutions, restore public confidence and provide direction for the next phase of the kingdom’s administration.
