Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has asked the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court to allow him access to urgent specialised medical care, saying his health has continued to deteriorate while in custody.
Lukwago, who attended the court session virtually from Luzira Prison, said medical specialists at Mulago National Referral Hospital had identified several serious health problems, including a herniated disc that requires immediate attention. He also cited ongoing breathing difficulties caused by permanent lung damage and complications linked to a previous spinal operation.
Through his lawyers, Lukwago argued that his medical needs cannot be properly addressed under prison conditions and requested quick action to secure appropriate treatment. The court later adjourned to review his plea.
The opposition politician remains on remand facing charges related to alleged failure to report a suspected treason plot. His legal team has continued to raise concerns about his health and the impact of continued detention on his wellbeing.
