President Museveni Pays Tribute to the Late Justice Prof. George W. Kanyeihamba

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today arrived at the home of the late Justice Professor George Wilson Kanyeihamba to pay his respects to one of Uganda’s most distinguished legal minds. The somber visit underscores the nation’s deep sense of loss following the passing of Justice Kanyeihamba, who died on Friday, 19th July 2025, at the age of 85.

Justice Kanyeihamba’s legacy is deeply embedded in Uganda’s legal and constitutional development. A former Justice of the Supreme Court, he was celebrated for his fearless commitment to justice, the rule of law, and human rights. His landmark judgments and vocal advocacy helped shape the foundation of Uganda’s modern judiciary.

In addition to his role on the bench, Prof. Kanyeihamba served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, where he played a critical role in guiding constitutional reform and strengthening legal institutions. He was also a founding member of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, championing civil liberties and institutional transparency.

An accomplished academic, Justice Kanyeihamba lectured in law at Makerere University and internationally. His writings and teachings earned him recognition across the continent and beyond as a leading authority on constitutional law.

During his visit, President Museveni described Justice Kanyeihamba as “a patriot, a brilliant jurist, and a guardian of Uganda’s constitutionalism.” The President’s visit reflects not only state mourning but also a profound appreciation for a life spent in selfless service to the country.

Justice Kanyeihamba will be laid to rest on Monday, 29th July 2025, with funeral arrangements already underway. Tributes continue to pour in from across the legal, academic, and political spheres, honoring a man whose integrity, intellect, and courage left an indelible mark on Uganda.

As the country prepares to bid farewell, Justice Kanyeihamba’s legacy remains a guiding light for future generations of leaders, jurists, and citizens committed to justice and democratic governance.
