President Yoweri Museveni has reportedly directed the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to release former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest, potentially bringing an end to months of restrictions imposed on her.
The development was announced by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba through his official X, formerly Twitter, account. In his post, Muhoozi said President Museveni had directed him to release Among from house arrest.
Among had earlier stepped aside from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid investigations into allegations relating to corruption, wealth declaration and the financial management of Parliament.
Her decision to withdraw from the race came as scrutiny over her leadership and conduct intensified, with several issues surrounding the management of parliamentary resources attracting public attention.
The reported directive from President Museveni is expected to trigger fresh debate about the circumstances surrounding Among’s restriction and what the next step will be for the former Speaker.
Further details about when her release will take effect and whether there will be any conditions attached to it are yet to be made public.
