Kizza Besigye to Represent Himself in Treason Case Amid Judicial Protest

On October 1, 2025, Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye dramatically dismissed all his lawyers during a High Court treason hearing, accusing Justice Emmanuel Baguma of bias and declaring that he no longer had faith in the judicial process. He said the move was intended to expose the lack of impartiality in Uganda’s courts.

Besigye is on trial alongside Hajji Obeid Lutale for alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow the government. During the same court session, ADF rebel commander Jamil Mukulu was unexpectedly brought in, creating a powerful — and controversial — image of a peaceful political figure being tried beside an alleged terrorist.

Besigye’s lead counsel, Martha Karua, has faced multiple barriers from courts despite being granted temporary permission to practice in Uganda. With the next hearing set for October 15, Besigye is now representing himself, insisting the court is being used as a political tool.

Observers fear the trial is part of a broader crackdown on dissent ahead of Uganda’s 2026 elections.
