Rumours swirl about Uganda’s politics, questioning if President Museveni will seek another term or if his son will succeed him. Different political parties aim to secure the presidential seat in 2026. This raises the importance of a peaceful transition of power which Uganda has never experienced since it’s independence in 1962. Preparation for this transition began in the 1950’s with the formation of political parties.
However, the power changes have occured through force rather than fair elections. Museveni emerged from a disputed election in 1980 and led a guerrilla war, capturing power in 1986. Uganda’s democracy is seen as an appointed system.
As we approach the 2026 elections in Uganda, the question of who will hold the Presidential seat arises. The hope is for a peaceful transition, without violence or unrest, similar to our neighbouring Countries. We have witnessed leaders in Kenya and Tanzania passing the torch, bringing change and progress.
We need someone to step forward and fight for what is best for Uganda, ensuring every citizen’s desires are met. Violence and bloodshed won’t bring about the change we seek. Although Museveni has been in power for 40 years, progress has been slow. Now, only recently, are we seeing infrastructure improvements. His departure raises important questions about who will succeed him and maintain peace and unity.
President Museveni has been in power for so many years and might plan to rule for even more. It seems he wants to stay in power indefinitely. He wishes to reverse his age because he believes in his accomplishments were easier when he was younger. Mugabe is an example of a leader whose age caught up with him. If Museveni is not prepared for life after being President, he may face accusations or threats to his life. It is also very much important for us to prepare for this difficult transition as well.
