Rwanda and Belgium Cut Diplomatic Ties Amid DRC Conflict

Kigali/Brussels – March 18, 2025 – Rwanda has severed diplomatic relations with Belgium, escalating tensions over the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Rwanda ordered all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours, citing Belgium’s interference in regional matters, its anti-Rwandan stance, and its role in pushing for sanctions over allegations of Rwanda supporting the M23 rebel group.

“Rwanda’s decision follows Belgium’s ongoing attempts to maintain its neocolonial delusions,” the government stated, accusing Belgium of destabilizing the region.

In retaliation, Belgium condemned Rwanda’s actions as “disproportionate” and announced measures including the expulsion of Rwandan diplomats and the suspension of cooperation agreements. The rift has been deepening, with Belgium playing a central role in mobilizing international pressure against Rwanda.

Belgium is Rwanda’s third-largest donor, and the diplomatic breakdown could jeopardize vital areas like trade, aid, and security cooperation.

As tensions rise, the diplomatic fallout adds complexity to the volatile situation in the DRC.
