Uganda could be on course to host one of the most watched moments of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reportedly opened discussions with the country over staging the tournament’s opening ceremony.
The development was revealed by Dr. Denis Mugimba, who said CAF has already engaged Ugandan authorities as preparations for the historic tournament continue.
Speaking during Sport’s Pamoja Show, Dr. Mugimba expressed confidence that Uganda is ready to take on the responsibility if selected.
“CAF has already contacted us about the AFCON 2027 opening ceremony. We have the resources and we are ready to host it if we are given the opportunity,” he said.
His remarks signal Uganda’s determination to play a leading role in the tournament, although the final decision on which country will host the opening ceremony will be made by CAF in consultation with the Local Organising Committee overseeing the joint Uganda-Kenya-Tanzania bid.
Hosting the opening ceremony would be a significant achievement for Uganda, placing the country in the international spotlight as millions of football fans across Africa and the world tune in to witness the official start of the continent’s biggest football competition.
The AFCON opening ceremony is traditionally a colourful celebration of African culture, music and entertainment before the tournament’s first match, making it one of the competition’s most anticipated events.
The 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, marking the first time the East African region will stage Africa’s premier football championship. The three countries are currently working together to upgrade stadiums, improve infrastructure and put in place the necessary logistics to ensure a successful tournament.
However, CAF is yet to officially announce how key events, including the opening ceremony, opening match and final, will be shared among the three host nations.
Should Uganda secure the rights to host the opening ceremony, it would mark another important milestone in the country’s preparations for AFCON 2027 and further demonstrate its readiness to welcome one of Africa’s biggest sporting events.
