Condom Shortage and Size Complaints Raise Fresh HIV Prevention Concerns

Uganda’s efforts to curb the spread of HIV could face a major setback if the ongoing shortage of condoms is not urgently addressed, the Uganda Network of AIDS Service Organisations (UNASO) has warned.

The concern was raised during a meeting with Parliament’s Committee on HIV/AIDS, where representatives of persons living with HIV/AIDS highlighted the growing scarcity of condoms across the country. They said the shortage is limiting access to one of the most effective tools for preventing HIV transmission and other sexually transmitted infections.

According to UNASO, the lack of condoms is already affecting communities that depend on consistent supplies for HIV prevention. The organisation appealed to the government to prioritise the procurement and distribution of condoms to ensure uninterrupted access, especially for vulnerable populations.

In addition to the shortage, the committee also heard complaints about the size of condoms currently being distributed. Representatives said many users have reported that the available condoms are too small, making them uncomfortable to use and discouraging consistent use.

They warned that the issue should not be dismissed, arguing that discomfort and poor fit may lead some people to avoid using condoms altogether, potentially increasing the risk of HIV transmission.

The concerns were presented as Parliament continues to assess challenges affecting Uganda’s HIV/AIDS response. Stakeholders urged policymakers to address both the supply gap and product suitability to strengthen prevention efforts.

UNASO called for swift government intervention, emphasizing that ensuring an adequate supply of appropriately sized condoms is essential to sustaining the country’s progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
