Kenyan Lawyer Martha Karua Granted Practicing Certificate to Represent Besigye in High-Profile Case

In a dramatic turn of events, Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua has finally obtained a practicing certificate from the Uganda Law Council, allowing her to represent Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale at the General Court Martial. This development comes after Karua’s appeal was unanimously approved by the council members, led by Court of Appeal Justice Irene Mulyagonja.

The journey to obtaining the practicing certificate wasn’t without its challenges. Initially, Karua’s application was rejected by the Law Council, citing concerns over her qualifications and potential political motivations. However, Karua persisted, filing an appeal with the Law Society President, Isaac Ssemakadde.

Karua’s involvement in the case has sparked controversy, with some questioning the Law Council’s decision to grant her a practicing certificate. Nevertheless, with the certificate in hand, Karua is now free to represent Besigye and Lutale.

The case against Besigye and Lutale has drawn significant attention, both locally and internationally. The two were arrested in Nairobi and later charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Karua’s involvement is seen as a significant development in the case, and many are eager to see how she will defend her clients.

As Karua prepares to lead the defense team, she has described Besigye as a “comrade in politics” and expressed her solidarity with him. With Karua on board, the defense team is poised to present a robust case on behalf of their clients.
