PARLIAMENT: Police Detention Cells Have Turned Into Death Traps.

The Public accounts committee of Parliament has criticized the Uganda Police Force over the ill conditions in their detention cells.

This came after reports that in some Police posts, men and women share the same cells, which denies them their right to privacy.

In some of the cells, suspects do their short and long calls in buckets which puts their health at risk since these cells are always not well ventilated , are over crowded and the act of using buckets as toilets is not also also healthy.

The Tororo Woman Mp Sarah Opendi said, “I find this unacceptable considering that Police has a construction unit and if it really looks at this as an issue, it would definitely construct those structures however small they maybe.”

“It is really a shame that in this era when the population of Uganda has greatly increased, that out of the sample, 11 facilities don’t have various cells for the women, men and children. Maybe we can start with you, we hold you today in one cell, men and women so that you experience it. Some people may leave the cells pregnant and you are actually causing domestic violence,” she further said.
