NUP Reshuffles Election Committee, Appoints Harriet Chemutai as Chairperson

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced a major overhaul of its Election Management Committee (EMC), appointing Harriet Chemutai as the new chairperson. Chemutai replaces Mercy Walukamba, who had held the position since 2020.

The changes were announced by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya during a press briefing on Tuesday at the party’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule. Ivan Ssempijja was appointed deputy chairperson, joining Chemutai in what party officials describe as a revitalized and dynamic leadership team tasked with steering electoral affairs ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In regional appointments, Ssebuufu John Mary will oversee the Central region, Achoka Egesa Eddie will handle Eastern Uganda, Loum Patrick will manage the Northern region, and Julian Kabagambe will coordinate Western Uganda.

Additional committee roles include:

  • Sultana Salim – Publicity Secretary
  • Jonathan Elotu – Legal Secretary
  • Eddie Kayabula – General Secretary
  • Alex Lovans Lwanyaga – Technical Advisor

Rubongoya expressed gratitude to the outgoing committee for its service and urged the new team to carry out its responsibilities with integrity and resilience. He also acknowledged delays in the party’s electoral roadmap, attributing them to interference by security agencies.

“We’ve faced unjustified disruptions by the police, even as the ruling NRM suspends parliament and cabinet to conduct its activities. It’s shameful,” Rubongoya stated.

Harriet Chemutai, formerly NUP’s coordinator for the Sebei region, pledged to uphold transparency and party values.

“We are building a different kind of leadership—accountable and incorruptible. If we act like the NRM, we lose our reason to exist. I won’t tolerate bribery,” she declared.

The new committee assumes its mandate at a pivotal time as NUP aims to expand its national presence and strengthen its internal structures ahead of the next elections. Supporters and critics alike will be watching closely to see whether the party can deliver a more transparent and disciplined electoral process.
