Self-Immolation Drama: Man Accuses NRM of Neglect.

By Dean Lubowa Saava

Benjamin Agaba, a young man from Uganda, made a desperate and dramatic statement near the entrance of Parliament by setting himself on fire. The motivation behind this shocking act was his frustration and feeling of abandonment by his own party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

According to Agaba, his life had been turned upside down due to his affiliation with the NRM. He alleged that supporters of the opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), had vandalized his property, leaving his father homeless. Despite seeking help from the NRM party offices for over a year, Agaba felt ignored and unsupported.

The pain and desperation that drove Agaba to take such a drastic measure are a testament to the deep-seated political tensions and divisions within Uganda. The incident highlights the need for political leaders to take responsibility for the welfare and safety of their supporters, particularly those who are vulnerable to violence and intimidation.

In a tragic coincidence, a similar incident occurred in India, where a 26-year-old man named Jitendra set himself on fire near the Parliament building in Delhi ¹. Jitendra succumbed to his injuries, and investigations revealed that he was driven by mental distress caused by a family dispute.

As Uganda grapples with the aftermath of Agaba’s desperate act, it is essential to recognize the warning signs of political violence and intimidation. The government and political leaders must work together to create a safe and inclusive environment for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.
