Raila Odinga’s Bid for AU Chairperson Falls Short.

By TV10 Editorial Desk

In a significant setback for Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, his bid to become the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) has been unsuccessful. Despite a rigorous campaign, Odinga was eliminated in the sixth round of voting, losing to Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

Odinga’s elimination marks another disappointment for Kenya at the regional body, following its earlier unsuccessful bids for key positions within the African Union. Youssouf, who now remains the sole candidate, is poised to become the seventh AUC Chairperson since the Commission’s establishment in 2002.

The election process requires a candidate to secure a two-thirds majority to win outright. Although Odinga has been eliminated, there is still a glimmer of hope for his candidacy. If Youssouf fails to achieve the necessary threshold, the race could be reopened, potentially allowing Odinga to re-enter the contest.

Odinga’s experience as a long-serving politician and pan-African advocate had made him a strong contender for the position. However, his failure to secure the necessary votes has raised questions about Kenya’s influence within the African Union.

The outcome of the election is a significant development for the African Union, as it seeks to address pressing regional issues, including economic development, peace, and security. As the African Union moves forward under new leadership, it remains to be seen how Odinga’s elimination will impact Kenya’s role within the organization.
