Cholera Outbreak Confirmed in Elegu Town,27 Isolated

Health officials have confirmed a cholera outbreak in Elegu Town Council, Amuru District, after 14 samples tested positive at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital. The outbreak follows reports of vomiting and diarrhea, including a case involving a four-year-old child.

Milton Okello, the district surveillance officer, said 27 people are currently in isolation—most at Bibia Health Center III—while 84 contacts have been traced. Thirteen additional suspected cases also tested positive using rapid diagnostic tests.

Resident District Commissioner Geoffrey Osborn Oceng said a district task force has been activated and medical supplies remain available. However, local leaders raised concerns over the lack of an ambulance, slowing emergency response efforts.

LCI Chairperson Kassim Akule, who transported four sick relatives by private car, warned that new cases are appearing daily and the situation could worsen without urgent support.

This outbreak comes less than three months after Lamwo District ended a similar cholera outbreak that infected over 100 people.
