After decades of wearing the military uniform, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala has officially retired from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The retirement ceremony took place at State House Entebbe, where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, is presiding over the occasion.
For Katumba, the event marks the end of a long and distinguished military journey that saw him rise through the ranks to become one of Uganda’s most senior and recognisable military officers.
His career has taken him through some of the most important moments in Uganda’s recent history. He served in several senior command positions, including as Chief of Defence Forces, before moving into government leadership.
Katumba’s retirement comes as part of a wider UPDF retirement exercise involving a number of senior officers and other personnel. His departure is particularly significant because of the senior positions he has held and his long-standing role in Uganda’s security establishment.
Although he is leaving active military service, Katumba is not leaving public life. He continues to serve in government as Minister of Public Service, meaning his experience in public administration and national leadership will remain relevant beyond the military.
For colleagues and those who have followed his career, the ceremony at State House is therefore both a farewell and a recognition of years spent serving the country.
As President Museveni leads the ceremony, the retirement of Gen Katumba Wamala closes an important chapter in his military career while opening another phase of his public service outside the UPDF.
