Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) leader Erias Lukwago will remain at Luzira Prison after the High Court postponed its ruling on his second bail application to July 31, 2026.
The hearing before Justice David Matovu was conducted behind closed doors, drawing criticism from opposition leaders and supporters who questioned why proceedings involving such a high-profile political figure were not held in open court.
Lukwago’s lawyers are seeking his temporary release on medical grounds, arguing that his worsening spinal condition requires specialized treatment in India. Lead counsel Medard Segona told the court that the defence had presented compelling evidence in support of bail.
The latest application follows dramatic events surrounding Lukwago’s previous bail proceedings, during which he briefly regained hope of release before ultimately being returned to Luzira Prison shortly afterward.
At the conclusion of the latest hearing, Justice Matovu reserved his ruling instead of delivering an immediate decision. The judge left the courtroom before the ruling was read, after which the court clerk informed those present that the decision had been postponed to July 31, 2026, and would be delivered online.
Outside court, supporters and political allies expressed disappointment over both the postponement and the decision to hold the hearing in camera. National Unity Platform Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya said justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done, urging the court to consider Lukwago’s health and constitutional right to bail.
For now, Lukwago remains on remand at Luzira Prison as supporters, family members and political allies await the court’s online ruling on July 31.
