President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni today led the groundbreaking ceremony for Bunyoro University in Kikuube District. He emphasized the need for free education in government schools and economic empowerment to ensure children, especially from poor families, can access higher education.
He urged leaders to implement Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) to prevent school dropouts, stressing that without free education, local children may miss out on opportunities at the new university.
“Free education should be a right for all children in government schools. The wealthy can afford private schools, but poor children should not drop out,” Museveni stated.
The President also encouraged families to support their children’s education beyond the limited government scholarships available, highlighting the importance of economic development at the household level.
Museveni advised university planners to prioritize courses that lead to employment. He shared lessons from Mbarara University, which started with medicine, ensuring that graduates would find jobs both locally and internationally.
“It’s unfair to educate a poor child in subjects with limited job prospects while others pursue fields with guaranteed employment,” he noted.
Reflecting on Uganda’s education progress, Museveni pointed out that when the NRM took power, Uganda had just one public university. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a public university in each of the country’s 18 zones.
With expected petroleum revenues next year, Museveni promised further development in Bunyoro and other region
First Lady Maama Janet Museveni praised the stakeholders for their efforts in making the university a reality. She confirmed that the government had already invested Shs. 6.4 billion in the project and developed 18 academic programs for the new university.
Professor Samuel Kyamanywa, Chair of the Bunyoro University Taskforce, called the university a game-changer for education in the region. Kikuube District LC 5 Chairperson, Mr. Peter Banura, urged unity among Bunyoro’s leaders to ensure the success of the university project.
