96 Prisoners on Death Row as 289 Serve Life Sentences in Uganda

New figures from the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) have highlighted the large number of inmates serving some of the country’s harshest sentences.

According to the data shared in the post, 96 prisoners are currently on death row across Uganda. The group comprises 93 men and three women.

The figures also show that 289 inmates are serving life sentences, including 275 men and 14 women.

The statistics shed light on the number of prisoners who have received severe sentences following convictions for serious offences. While a death sentence remains on the books, its implementation is subject to Uganda’s legal and judicial processes, including the possibility of appeals and other forms of legal review.

The figures also raise broader questions about Uganda’s criminal justice and prison systems, including the length of time inmates spend behind bars, access to legal representation and the rehabilitation of prisoners serving lengthy sentences.

With hundreds of inmates either awaiting the outcome of death sentences or serving life imprisonment, the latest UPS figures offer a glimpse into the scale of long-term incarceration in the country.
