She attended Gayaza Junior School and King’s College Budo, before pursuing social work studies in Scotland. Her entry into politics in 1961 marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. Kalema’s leadership skills, coupled with her passion for social justice, earned her key roles in Uganda’s government. She served as a Deputy Minister of Public Service from 1989 to 1991 and was a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1994, where she made history by defeating eight male opponents in Kiboga District.

She was a mentor to many female politicians, including Ruth Nankabirwa, and played a pivotal role in shaping policies that benefited women and marginalized communities.
