Ms. Sharifah Buzeki and her deputy, Mr. Kigenyi Benon, were officially sworn in today as the new Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). They replace Dorothy Kisaka and David Luyimabazi, following their dismissal by the President after a series of challenges, including the recent landslide in Kampala.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Buzeki was congratulated by many, including the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, who offered both words of encouragement and caution. Lukwago welcomed Buzeki to her new role but also reminded her of the complexities that come with the position.
“To Sharifah, the position you are in is loved and loathed in equal measure. It’s not easy to either congratulate or feel sorry for you,” Lukwago remarked. He added that Buzeki should take time to reflect on why he has remained in the office for over five years and urged her to approach the challenges with a deep sense of understanding.
Buzeki responded with a commitment to addressing Kampala’s pressing issues, saying, “We’ll fight the battle and acquire land, but we must adopt new models and develop methods to reduce pressure on the landfill.”
She also outlined her ambitious plans for the city, including strengthening the urban planning department, improving response times to public complaints, digitizing public transport to ease traffic congestion, regulating public spaces, and combating corruption.
“I know many have said I am tough, and that may be true for those who fail to deliver,” she added confidently.
Buzeki becomes the third woman to hold the position of Executive Director of KCCA, following Jennifer Musisi, the first woman to serve in the role, and then Dorothy Kisaka.
As she steps into office, Buzeki will be tasked with addressing long-standing challenges in Kampala, including waste management and corruption—issues that have plagued the city for years.
