Two retired senior Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers have reportedly been arrested following controversy surrounding a viral video showing recently retired generals dancing during their send-off ceremony.
The arrested officers as retired Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho and Brig. Gen. Charles Bakahumura, both former heads of Uganda’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
The development comes days after a video showing the retired officers in red ceremonial military uniforms dancing at their farewell event attracted widespread attention on social media.
The footage triggered debate among members of the public, with some questioning the conduct of the officers while others argued that their participation in a celebratory farewell should not be treated as misconduct.
Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba had earlier spoken out against what came to be referred to as the “dancing Generals,” promising to take action over the incident.
In his latest social media posts, Muhoozi reportedly indicated that one of the retired generals was already in custody, while another was said to be on the run.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the UPDF or other security authorities regarding the reported arrests.
The claims have therefore continued to generate discussion, particularly over how retired senior military officers should be treated and whether their actions at a private or ceremonial function warrant disciplinary action.
The controversy also comes at a time when the UPDF continues to undergo changes involving senior commanders, making developments surrounding the retired generals a subject of considerable public interest.
