Nakasongola MP Ivan Kyeyune Says He Lost His TV Job After NTV Uganda Shutdown

Nakasongola County MP Ivan Kyeyune has revealed that he is currently without a media job following the closure of NTV Uganda, where he worked as a television presenter before joining Parliament.

Speaking during a meeting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, Kyeyune told fellow legislators that the shutdown of the television station left him unemployed.

“I am jobless because my TV station was closed,” he said.

Kyeyune’s remarks come as uncertainty continues to surround the future of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda, whose outlets—including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, Dembe FM, and the Daily Monitor—were shut down on the orders of Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who later said the action had President Yoweri Museveni’s approval.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) says investigations into the closure are still ongoing and has asked the public to remain patient.

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said the commission will only issue its official position after receiving the final investigation report from the ongoing security inquiry. He declined to comment on reports of negotiations between government officials and Nation Media Group over a possible reopening.

Despite the continued closure, discussions between the government and NMG are understood to be progressing. Reports indicate that Gen. Muhoozi recently met the company’s majority shareholder, Rostam Aziz, to discuss concerns over the group’s editorial coverage. Sources say the talks focused on ensuring that the company’s reporting adheres to professional journalistic standards.

Inside the media house, management has reportedly asked employees to remain calm and avoid commenting publicly while negotiations continue. Staff are also said to be preparing editorial content in anticipation of a possible return to operations.

Although no reopening date has been announced, multiple sources familiar with the discussions say both sides are working towards a resolution.

The closure has attracted criticism from media freedom advocates, who argue that it raises serious concerns about press freedom and media independence. For journalists like Ivan Kyeyune, however, the shutdown has also brought a personal cost, leaving many media professionals uncertain about their future as they await the outcome of the ongoing talks.
