Jim Muhwezi Elected Unopposed as Rukungiri NRM Chairperson

Security Minister Rtd Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi Katugugu has been elected unopposed as the Rukungiri District Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) following the withdrawal of his rival, Rtd Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde.

Tumukunde, also a former Security Minister, announced his exit from the race, citing what he described as “irregularities witnessed during the process.” In a statement, he said, “This decision comes after serious reflection. My commitment to serve the people of Rukungiri remains unwavering.”

Despite stepping down from the district leadership contest, Tumukunde remains politically active and is currently seeking the parliamentary seat for Rukungiri Municipality.

Eyewitnesses claimed Tumukunde’s campaign was marred by violent incidents, including an alleged attack on the local Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO), further complicating his bid.

Muhwezi’s uncontested election positions him as a central figure in mobilizing support for the NRM in Rukungiri ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Meanwhile, at the national level, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (popularly known as Uhuru) was re-elected unopposed as the NRM National Chairman during the party’s leadership assembly held in Kampala. His unchallenged victory cements his long-standing grip on the ruling party.

Additionally, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among was elected to a top leadership position within the NRM, further consolidating her influence in both the legislature and the party hierarchy.

The recent developments reflect a broader strategic alignment within the NRM as it gears up for the 2026 electoral cycle.
