Charges Confirmed in Joan Kagezi Assassination Case

The High Court’s International Crimes Division has confirmed charges of terrorism and murder against four suspects involved in the 2015 assassination of Joan Namazzi Kagezi, a former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions.

On March 24, 2025, Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha’s ruling cleared the way for the trial of Kisekka Daniel Kiwanuka (A1), Kibuuka John (A2), Massajjage John (A3), and Nasur Abdallah Mugonole (A4). The charges stem from the brutal murder of Kagezi on March 30, 2015, when assailants on a motorcycle shot and killed her in front of her children.

The prosecution’s case relies on confessions, witness testimony, and forensic evidence linking the accused to the crime. Kagezi, known for her work prosecuting terrorism cases, was targeted in an act intended to intimidate the legal community. Some suspects even sought protection from a witch doctor after the killing.

Justice Khaukha ruled the killing was premeditated and an act of terrorism. The trial will proceed, expected to uncover more details about the conspiracy behind Kagezi’s death.

The case marks a significant step in the fight against targeted attacks on legal professionals in Uganda.
