Acholi Leaders and President Museveni Commit to Socio-Economic Transformation

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has met with opposition leaders from Acholi, agreeing to put aside political differences and work together for the region’s socio-economic transformation.

The meeting, held at State House in Entebbe, marked a shift as MPs from different political parties pledged to collaborate with the government to tackle poverty and improve development. President Museveni emphasized that unity is crucial for sustainable development, recalling Uganda’s history of division, particularly in 1961, which led to political instability. He highlighted that the NRM government has worked to overcome these challenges

The President reflected on Uganda’s past divisions, pointing out that sectarianism had hindered national unity and development. He called for unity, stressing that focusing on reconciliation, rather than revenge, is key to moving forward

Museveni discussed various strategies for development, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He emphasized the need for affordable education, better healthcare through prevention, and improved infrastructure to address regional disparities

Opposition leaders, led by Hon. Okin Ojara, committed to prioritizing the development of Acholi over political differences. Ojara revealed that 10 opposition MPs from Acholi formed ‘Operation Harmony’ to focus on socio-economic transformation, with a particular emphasis on mental health, war compensation, and infrastructure.

The leaders called for a mental health rehabilitation center and better healthcare facilities, including upgrading Kitgum General Hospital. They also urged the government to focus on rehabilitation of key roads to improve access to services

The leaders also supported the establishment of more vocational training centers and highlighted the need to apply “Musevenomics” and the Four Acre Model to boost agriculture and improve livelihoods in Acholi.

The meeting represents a significant step toward a united effort to address Acholi’s challenges. Both government and opposition leaders pledged to collaborate for the prosperity and well-being of the region’s people.
