However, this technology advancement also raises significant risks including bias, discrimination and privacy violations. To address these challenges, governance professionals are being urged to embrace AI in corporate structures prioritizing ethical AI practices and responsible AI development and deployment.

The importance of ethical AI practices cannot be overstated. Governance professionals must ensure that AI systems are designed and developed with fairness, transparency and accountability in mind. This requires prioritizing responsible data collection, AI governance and ethical AI engineering. Responsible data collection involves ensuring data privacy , obtaining proper user consent and sourcing diverse and representative data to enhance fairness. AI governance requires building compliance into the AI lifecycle establishing clear rules and regulations implementing robust data governance frameworks. Ethical AI engineering involves embedding ethical principles within AI pipelines using techniques such as data lineage tracking, bias detection and explainability frameworks.

Furthermore, governance professionals must stay up-to-date with evolving AI regulations including the European Union’s AI Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These regulations aim to ensure that AI system are deployed in a way that respects human rights, dignity and privacy.

Ultimately, embracing AI in corporate structures requires a proactive approach to AI ethics and governance. Governance professionals must lead the charge in establishing AI best practices, ensuring compliance and driving responsible AI innovation. This requires collaboration with stakeholders including policymakers, technologist and civil society organisations.

According to Jane Okot Langoya, chairperson of ICSA Uganda, governance professionals must move beyond the biases surrounding AI, as these biases can significantly impact decision-making. Langoya emphasizes the importance of embracing AI and prioritizing ethical AI practices to ensure that AI benefits society as a whole.

The integration of AI in corporate governance is critical issue that requires immediate attention. Governance professionals must prioritize ethical AI practices, stay informed about evolving AI regulations and lead the charge in establishing AI practices. By doing so we can ensure that AI is developed and deployed in a way that benefits society while minimizing it’s risks and negative consequences.
