The joint security team has commenced questioning Nixon Agasiirwe, a former Police Special Operations Commander, in connection with the murder of Joan Kagezi, a senior state prosecutor who was assassinated on March 30, 2015.
Agasiirwe’s questioning also coincides with renewed interest in other high-profile murders, including the killing of former Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi on March 17, 2017, and the targeted killings of 12 Muslim clerics between 2014 and 2016.
Kagezi Murder Case Details
Victim Background: Joan Kagezi was a Senior Principal State Attorney who headed the crimes department in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. At the time of her death, she was prosecuting suspects involved in the 2010 Kampala twin bombings case.
Murder Circumstances: Kagezi was fatally shot by assailants on motorcycles while she stopped to buy fruits in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb.
Investigation Breakthrough: A key prosecution witness, Daniel Kisseka, a former UPDF officer who deserted the army, pleaded guilty to the murder and implicated Agasiirwe as the orchestrator of the assassination. Kisseka testified that he and others acted under Agasiirwe orders.
Nixon Agasiirwe’s Arrest and Links to Other Crimes
Arrest: Agasiirwe was arrested on May 22, 2025, following Kisseka’s confession and testimony.
Link to Other Killings: Investigators are revisiting a 2016 government ballistics report that linked the gun used in Kagezi’s assassination to earlier killings of Muslim clerics, including Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga and Sheikh Hassan Kirya.
Alleged Role: Agasiirwe is accused of masterminding Kagezi’s murder, with Kisseka and others carrying out the assassination.
