Bobi Wine Officially Nominated for Uganda’s 2026 Presidential Race Amid Competitive Field

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, will be officially nominated as a presidential candidate for Uganda’s 2026 elections this Wednesday, his party confirmed. This sets the stage for a possible rematch with long-serving President Yoweri Museveni.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) announced on Tuesday evening that Bobi Wine’s nomination would be marked by a rally in Nateete under the slogan “A New Uganda Now.” The event aims to launch a nationwide campaign and mobilization effort.

At 43, Bobi Wine transitioned from a popular musician to a key political figure when he first ran against Museveni in the 2021 election. Despite running one of the most competitive opposition campaigns in recent years, Bobi Wine lost to Museveni, who has been in power since 1986. He disputed the election results, raising concerns about alleged irregularities and state interference.

The 2021 election attracted international attention after security forces arrested opposition members and disrupted campaign events, with reports of pre-election violence resulting in several deaths.

Bobi Wine’s nomination followed a challenging process with the Electoral Commission, which initially rejected his list of supporters. The NUP responded by submitting additional signatures in a rapid mobilization effort, leading to the eventual verification and clearance for nomination.

In a related development, after media personality Nsereko failed to gather the required signatures to qualify as a candidate, he publicly announced his support for Bobi Wine’s bid, signaling increased opposition unity.

President Museveni, now 81, was nominated earlier this week to seek another term under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). His campaign emphasizes maintaining Uganda’s stability and continuing economic growth as the country works toward middle-income status.

Other candidates expected to be nominated alongside Bobi Wine include former presidential contenders Mugisha Muntu, Yoweri Kaguta, and Nandala Mafabi, signaling a diverse and competitive election landscape.

This upcoming election will be closely watched as it presents a test for Uganda’s electoral processes and the opposition’s ability to unite against a long-standing incumbent.

With his nomination secured, Bobi Wine is anticipated to outline a campaign focused on governance reforms, anti-corruption efforts, and expanding opportunities for Uganda’s youth.

NUP officials say the rally on Wednesday will serve as a symbolic start to their campaign and efforts to engage voters across the country.
